Each year we run the car park stewarding at the Littleton Show, at the end of the summer holidays, in return for a very useful donation to the 1st Winchester. We don’t need as many volunteers as we do for the Sparsholt Countryside Day, but we do need enough people to do the job and that can be tricky, because some people tend to be away during that last week of the holidays. So, if you are around and can spare a little bit of time to help, please do put Saturday September 1st into your diary. Many thanks!
We are delighted to announce that Mike Wilson is our new Group Scout Leader (GSL)! Mike is a very experienced Scout leader who has been in charge of the Greeks (Thursday evening scouts) for many years. Mark Weston-Smith has now taken over as the new leader of the Greeks, but that means we need another new leader to help on Thursday evenings. If you’d like to help, or to find out a bit more about what would be involved, please contact Dave Kesby, Mike or Mark.
We’re also very pleased to say that Gill Bowyer is now our Group Admin Assistant, a new role created to assist the GSL and to take control of important administrative tasks including DBS processing. But we are also still looking for a new Assistant GSL to help both Mike and Gill with their duties. Again, if you’re interested, please do get in touch.
On Saturday 30th September 1st Winchester Scouts travelled to the Boaz Project Hampshire to help with the Billy Boaz Family Fun Day. We helped to set up stalls and to serve refreshments. We were also asked to run an outdoor garden games section, which included chess, archery and a more unusual game called Cub.
It was great fun and lovely to see all the participants taking part in the sponsored walk and run. We were all given a medal at the end of the day as a thank-you for our help.

1st Winchester Scout AGM is on the 14th July at 8pm at 1st Place. It will be a quick an minimalist AGM which will cover only the key requirements under the governance process of the Scout Association. However, it makes it no less important for parents and leaders to pay attention to our reports and ensure that we in the Executive Committee are doing our job to help run the Group successfully. The following documents will be presented for agreement at the AGM. Questions can be raised before or during the AGM.
Subs will increase by £1 per term in May to £49. Direct Debits will automatically change to this new figure. If you have any concerns about payments, please raise it with one of your leaders. We never wish problems with finance to exclude any young person attending 1st Winchester Scout Group. A full explanation of where this money is spent will be shared at our AGM in June.
Voters chose 1st Place as the new name for the Scout HQ. It will be officially named at the Grand Opening on Thursday 22nd Jan. In time we will have a plaque designed and put on the front of the building.
Our new building (it’s definitely not a hut anymore!) will be open after half term. It still won’t have a vinyl floor because the concrete isn’t yet ready to allow the floor to stick to it. But that won’t stop everyone getting settled in and having fun!

We need loads of volunteers every weekend in September. Look at our programme under Building Appeal/Fundraising & Events and commit to all the days you can. If we don’t complete, we can’t re-open.
A big thank you for everyone who helped with car parking at the Littleton Show on Saturday 6th Sept. Once again we did a great job and earned the Group funds several hundred pounds. There were lots of well known helpers and it was great to see some new faces too.
